Houston ISD considering $17 million increase in special education spending

Houston ISD Interim Superintendent Grenita Lathan is asking the district’s school board Thursday to authorize $17 million in additional spending for special education, a request that comes a week after her administration dismissed a state investigation sharply critical of HISD’s support of students with disabilities.

HISD administrators said they plan to use the money to hire more speech language pathologists, mental health specialists, occupational and physical therapists, and assistive technology specialists, among others.

District officials have offered scant details on the request, other than listing the job titles in a press release. HISD administrators did not respond to questions Wednesday about the proposal, including how many employees would be hired and why they are needed.

HISD administrators listed the $17 million request as a line item in a budget document posted last week, but they offered no explanation of the request. Board members did not ask about the request during

University of Michigan staff continue demanding change after grad students end strike

A strike over conditions during the coronavirus pandemic at the University of Michigan ended this week after two proposals and legal action from the institution. But students and staff are continuing to demand change.

GEO, the union representing over 2,000 graduate student instructors and graduate staff assistants at the school’s three campuses, went on strike Sept. 8, with a list of demands including the right to work remotely and increasing COVID-19 testing. On Wednesday, after extending the four-day strike, it announced it had accepted a second offer from the university.

The Space Force absolutely plans on deploying U.S. service members to defend freedom in the great expanse of outer space, according to one of the service’s top officials.

Maj. Gen. John E. Shaw said Tuesday that the service will someday deploy so-called space warfighters into orbit around the Earth, even raising the prospect of a Space Force moon base.

“At some point, yes, we will be putting humans into space,” Shaw, the command of the service’s Space Operations Command, said Tuesday. “They may be operating command centers somewhere in the lunar environment or someplace else.”

Shaw’s comments were first reported by Air Force magazine, which noted that Space Force officials “usually shy away from questions about whether military personnel will go to the Final Frontier themselves” due to NASA’s role in manned space travel.

“For us, it remains focused on our commanders in the field. So that’s why we’ve gone
