Welcome! We hope you’ll walk 5K with Prevention on October 3: The walking is real—it’s the community that’s virtual.
You’re probably familiar with local runs and walks held at a specific location. You’ve got to live close enough to get there by the start time—and parking can be a beast. With a virtual walk, you pick where you do it, who you do it with, and what time you start.
Here’s everything you need to know to join in!
So it’s actually free?
Of course! Signing up, participating, and sharing your progress online is completely free.
What if I can’t do it on October 3?
That’s okay! Sign up, do your 5K anytime in October, and wear your T-shirt proudly. We’ll be sharing photos on our social media that day, and hope you will too—but we’ll be excited to hear about your walk whenever you do it.
Is there any Virtual Walk swag?
Of course—what’s a 5K without some swag? You can pick up a starter kit with a bib and sign for $5, a Virtual Walk tech tee for $35, and a box with tons of goodies (and a shirt, too) for $50. There are only 500 of those premium boxes available, so make sure to order soon!
And if you share your “Why I Walk” story with us, you can enter for a chance to win one of 10 Fitbit Charge 4 smart watches, no purchase necessary, to reach your fitness goals! Already own a device? Fitbit would love to hear from you. Share your personal health journey here.
How do you know I really did a 5K?
Frankly, we don’t. But we trust you—that’s what community is all about. We’ll be following along with everyone who posts on social media, so be sure to share your experience and use #virtualwalk and #WhyIWalk. We’ll also be sending certificates of completion to everyone who signs up, which are perfect for printing out.
You also don’t need to report your final time or distance to us! This event is meant to inspire us all to exercise a little more, not stress you anyone out with logistics. Be proud of yourself without feeling the need to send any info to us!
Can I walk with a group?
Yes! When you sign up, you’ll have the option to join or create a team, which works great for friends, coworkers, or other groups who want to sign up and walk together. (By the way, wearing our Virtual Walk shirts are a great way to look more like a team.) But if you want to walk with people without creating a team, don’t sweat it—it’s a completely optional feature.
How can I prepare for the Virtual Walk?
We’ll be sending an exclusive newsletter to everyone who signs up for the event. And we’re so excited to reveal that fitness icon Denise Austin created an exclusive four-week walking plan to get you ready to walk, so we know you’ll able to do it.
The plan starts on September 5, and it’s available only to people who register for the Virtual Walk, so make sure you sign up! “Walking is truly my favorite way to exercise,” Denise says. “So excited to be part of this fall’s Virtual Walk with Prevention!”
Why should I walk?
It’s incredibly good for you: Walking can reduce belly fat, protect your brain, and add years to your life. But you might also walk for other reasons, like to catch up with a friend or to explore your neighborhood. There’s lots more advice on our Virtual Walk page, too.
How do I sign up?
You can also email [email protected] with any questions. We look forward to “walking” with you!
