Musician Katy Perry opened up in a new interview about the emotional aftermath that followed her initial breakup with actor Orlando Bloom.
Though the couple split up in February of 2017, they have since rekindled their romance and are now expecting their first child together.
Perry revealed during the conversation that her and Bloom’s breakup combined with subtle career changes led her to experience a dark emotional period.
Katy Perry is sharing more details about how she and fiancé Orlando Bloom are stronger than ever together.
In a new cover story with People, Perry shared that the couple’s spending time apart in 2017 helped build the bond they share today.
“It’s really about an individual journey that makes the whole thing better. We both had to decide to go on that journey separately because it’s not my half and your half that makes a whole,” Perry told People. “It’s my wholeness and your wholeness that makes this whole thing happen.”
Perry also revealed that a song off of her upcoming album, Smile, titled “Champagne Problems,” was specifically written about the romantic hardships she and Bloom had previously endured.
“It’s a song that really talks about how intense it’s gotten and how many things we have had to go through. Yes, we have problems. Everybody has challenges in a relationship,” continued Perry. “If it’s a real relationship, it’s going to challenge you into your best self. I really understand what Justin Timberlake said about, ‘You’re my mirror,’ because it’s true. They bring up all this stuff you can’t really see about yourself.”
Original Story 6/29/2020:
Katy Perry is opening up about the emotional aftermath of her original split from her fiancé, Orlando Bloom.
During an interview with radio host Tom Power of Q on CBC per CNN, the “Small Talk” singer explained that after breaking up with the Carnival Row actor back in 2017, she found herself in an extremely vulnerable and dark, depleted place. Perry also credited not feeling any sort of fulfillment after the release of an album and a lack of inspiration within her music career to her reaching a breaking point with her mental health at the time.
“My career was on this trajectory when it was going up, up and up and then I had the smallest shift, not that huge from an outside perspective. But for me, it was seismic,” said Perry during the interview. “I had given so much out, and it literally broke me in half. I had broken up with my boyfriend, who is now my baby daddy-to-be. And then I was excited about flying high off the next record. But the validation did not make me high, and so I just crashed.”
Perry continued, explaining that between the changes within her career and her sudden breakup with Bloom, she had experienced a major emotional crisis. “It was so important for me to be broken so that I could find my wholeness in a whole different way. And be more dimensional than just living my life like a thirsty pop star all the time,” added Perry. “Gratitude is probably the thing that saved my life, because if I didn’t find that I would have wallowed in my own sadness and probably just jumped but I found the ways to be grateful.”
